Cosmetic makers promise no dangerous chemicals in ingredients. Study revealed the truth

Cosmetics manufacturers often promise products free of harmful chemicals, but a new study reveals a starkly different reality. Independent research conducted by the Million Marker Research Institute in the U.S. found that a vast majority of personal care and cleaning products contain undisclosed hazardous substances.

The study, published in the journal 'Environment & Health,' tested 113 products across 12 categories. The findings were alarming: 98% of the products contained at least one unlisted chemical. More concerning, 85% included a chemical with known or suspected health risks that was not declared on the label. This was true even for items marketed as 'natural' or 'non-toxic.'

Dr. Jenna Hua, a public health specialist and lead author of the study, stated, "We found undisclosed harmful chemicals in products that claim not to contain them." She explained that consumers might carefully select products labeled as 'clean' only to be exposed to the very chemicals they sought to avoid. "The label doesn't protect you if it doesn't show what's really in the bottle," Hua added.

On average, the tested products contained 51 unlisted chemicals, more than triple the number of ingredients declared on their labels. Some products advertised as 'phthalate-free' were found to contain phthalates. The undisclosed substances included endocrine disruptors, fragrances, silicone contaminants, and BHT. Previous research has linked such chemicals to various health issues, including infertility, miscarriages, breast cancer, obesity, diabetes, and allergies.
