Costa Rica sends 102 firefighters to Canada to help combat wildfires

Costa Rica has dispatched a contingent of 102 forest firefighters and three specialist technicians to British Columbia, Canada, to aid in the ongoing battle against devastating wildfires. The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) confirmed the deployment, highlighting the rigorous selection process that involved physical, medical, and experience-based evaluations for the 300 individuals who initially applied.

The firefighters were selected from among 300 people who registered for the process and had to undergo physical, medical tests, and verification of training requirements and years of experience in combating forest fires.

The mission is slated to last 33 days, with the firefighters expected to return to Costa Rica on September 13. This marks the sixth time Costa Rica has sent personnel to assist Canada with its wildfire crisis since 2023, bringing the total number of participating firefighters to 542. The MINAE views these international deployments as crucial for enhancing the skills and preparedness of its domestic brigades, improving their response to emergencies within Costa Rica.

Canada is currently grappling with an unprecedented wildfire season, with over 4.1 million hectares burned and more than 600 active fires, over 100 of which are uncontrolled. The severity of the situation has necessitated international aid. Recent reports from British Columbia indicate that a fast-moving wildfire has resulted in at least one fatality and forced the evacuation of over 20,000 people, underscoring the urgent need for resources and collaborative efforts in managing these environmental disasters.
