Counterproductive? US Intelligence Shows Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Intends to Develop Advanced Nuclear Weapons

Contrary to expectations that Iran's new leadership would adopt a more moderate stance, US intelligence indicates that the current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba, son of the former leader Ayatollah Khamenei, may be pursuing advanced nuclear weapons. This assessment is largely based on intelligence gathered before the recent conflict that led to the deaths of Khamenei and other high-ranking officials.

Mojtaba, who reportedly operates with restricted communication and public appearances due to security concerns and injuries, holds less absolute power than his father. While he leads the Tehran government, his influence is not yet on par with Khamenei's previous authority. The intelligence suggests a shift in nuclear ambitions, moving beyond the development of simpler, Hiroshima-style weapons that could serve as a deterrent, towards more sophisticated thermonuclear warheads capable of being mounted on long-range missiles.
