Coup Suspect Arrives Court Ahead of Arraignment in Nigeria

Proceedings are set to commence at the Federal High Court in Abuja concerning an alleged coup plot, with one defendant, Abdulkadir Sani, already present. Unlike the other five defendants currently in custody, Sani arrived early as he is not detained.

The Federal Government has brought a 13-count charge against seven individuals, including retired military officers and a former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, who is reportedly at large. The charges encompass allegations of terrorism, conspiracy, and failure to disclose information related to a planned attempt to overthrow the government.

The prosecution alleges that the defendants conspired in 2025 in Abuja to commit acts of terrorism and to "levy war" against the Nigerian state. They are also accused of failing to disclose intelligence about the plot and neglecting to take steps to prevent its execution, despite possessing knowledge of the plan involving other alleged conspirators. The arraignment is scheduled before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, with security visibly heightened around the court premises.
