Couple faces death penalty for alleged drug trafficking in Malaysia

A husband and wife are facing the death penalty after being charged with trafficking 480.60 grams of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Teoh Wai Loon, 44, and Lim Suk Pei, 38, appeared before Magistrate S. Punitha, where the charges were read. No plea was recorded from either defendant.

The couple is accused of trafficking the dangerous drug MDMA, weighing approximately 480.60 grams, at a premises in Bercham Bistari 4, Medan Bercham Bistari, Kinta district. The alleged offense occurred at 10:30 p.m. on August 4, 2026.

They were charged under Section 39B (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death sentence or life imprisonment. If not sentenced to death, the punishment includes at least 12 strokes of the cane.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Zulqarnain Wan Asmira, while the couple was not represented by legal counsel. The court scheduled December 7 for case mention, awaiting a chemistry report. Media reports from August 6 indicated that seven individuals, including the couple, were arrested with ketamine and Erimin 5 pills worth over RM538,000 in Ipoh and Tapah.
