Grandmother, 39, Charged with Murder of Infant Step-Grandchild

A 39-year-old woman, identified as a grandmother, has been charged with the murder of her 16-month-old step-grandchild in Kota Tinggi. The accused, Nurul Farhana Laili Shah, appeared before Magistrate Hafizah Abdul Rajak, where she acknowledged understanding the charge, though no plea was recorded as the case falls under the High Court's jurisdiction.

The indictment states that Nurul Farhana allegedly killed Nur Anggun Dahlia Abdullah between 12:30 p.m. on July 30 and 9:30 a.m. on July 31 at a residence in Taman Sri Saujana. The charge is brought under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death sentence or a maximum of 40 years imprisonment if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Afiqah Musa requested the court to set a date for the case's mention pending the results of chemical, post-mortem, and DNA reports. No bail was offered. The court has scheduled December 11 for the next hearing. The accused is represented by lawyers Lidyana Mansor and Farah Yasmin.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab. Rahaman Arsad previously reported that two other individuals, the victim's grandfather and mother, were initially detained to assist with the investigation but were later released to serve as prosecution witnesses. Autopsy results indicated that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen and chest, with evidence of physical abuse found on the victim.
