Couple hacked to death by son in Bangladesh; drug abuse cited

A couple was allegedly hacked to death by their son in their home in Anwara upazila of Chattogram, Bangladesh. The deceased have been identified as Swapan Das Gupta, 65, and his wife, Kalpana Das, 50.

Police have arrested the couple's only son, Romeo Das Gupta, 30, in connection with the murders. According to Mahmudul Hasan, assistant superintendent of police (Anwara Circle), Romeo has a history of drug abuse, which had reportedly led to frequent conflicts with his parents.

The alleged attack occurred around 1:00 PM. Police stated that Romeo first attacked his mother, Kalpana, slitting her throat and killing her instantly. He then proceeded to another room where he allegedly attacked his father, Swapan.

Local residents, alerted by screams, rushed to the house and found Swapan injured. He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries en route. After the alleged killings, Romeo reportedly took a bath and sat quietly in his room, where police apprehended him. The bodies have been sent for an autopsy, and legal proceedings are underway.
