Couple Opens 'Kavica' Coffee Shop in Zagreb, Offering Specialty Drinks in Reusable Cans

In the Zapruđe neighborhood of Zagreb, a new specialty coffee shop named Kavica is brewing up a unique experience, conceptualized by its founders Karla Gaši and Karlo Mamić during their first date. The shop, located on Meštrović Square, is designed for takeaway, serving coffee and matcha for those on the go to school, work, or a walk in the nearby Bundek park. Gaši explained that the idea stemmed from observing a lack of such accessible, quality coffee spots in neighborhoods, contrasting with the bustling city center. Kavica aims to make specialty coffee approachable, with prices ranging from 1.50 euros for an espresso to 2.20 euros for a cappuccino. They use Brazilian coffee beans, roasted by Four Wheel Coffee Roasters in Zagreb, focusing on notes of chocolate and hazelnut that are popular with local palates. Mamić highlighted their goal to introduce specialty coffee with familiar flavors and reasonable prices, encouraging customers to try something different. The couple also introduced an innovative offering: their "specials," such as caramel iced coffee and vanilla matcha, are prepared and served in reusable cans. These cans have become a talking point, with customers sharing stories of repurposing them for various uses, from making coffee at home to planting flowers. Kavica prides itself on building trust with local customers, including employees from nearby shops, and values their feedback, seeing themselves as an integral part of the neighborhood's daily life.

We are that kind of people, it's ingrained in our culture. We like to sit over coffee for five hours and talk with friends. That's my favorite thing too. Precisely for that reason, we concluded that there is a lack of such places in the city, and we are all constantly rushing somewhere and doing something in the city.
