Court adjourns trial of Anambra native doctor over ill-health

The Anambra State High Court in Awka was set to hear the arraignment of Nnewi-based native doctor Ikechukwu Ezenagu, widely known as “Mmuo Mmili Afulu Anya.” However, the proceedings were halted on Friday as the defendant appeared frail and required assistance from security operatives to enter the courtroom, raising immediate concerns about his fitness to stand trial.

Presiding judge, Justice Jude Obiora, observed Ezenagu's condition and deemed him unfit to enter a plea due to his ill-health. Consequently, the judge adjourned the case to June 3, allowing the defendant time to address his medical condition. This decision followed a contentious exchange between the prosecution, led by Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Tobechukwu Nweke, and Ezenagu's counsel, Kingsley Awuka. While the prosecution argued for the trial to proceed, the defense maintained that their client needed urgent medical attention.

Ezenagu's arrest, reported by PUNCH Online on March 26, stemmed from allegations of violating the state's Homeland Security Law. He was apprehended by the state government's security outfit, Agunechemba, for allegedly luring young men and women with promises of quick wealth, contingent upon them bathing in a stream behind his residence. Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, stated that Ezenagu had previously been cautioned about his activities but continued the practice, which is considered a violation of the law. The state government, through the Attorney General, has affirmed its readiness to continue with the prosecution once Ezenagu is fit to stand trial.
