Court affirms Jimi Lawal as Ogun ADC gov candidate; Ogundipe to appeal

The Federal High Court in Abeokuta has officially recognized Jimi Lawal as the legitimate governorship candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State. The ruling, delivered by Justice Abiodun Jordan Adeyemi, declared that the primary election which nominated Lawal adhered strictly to the Electoral Act, the ADC's constitution, and all relevant statutory requirements.

The court further affirmed that the primary election underwent proper monitoring by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Consequently, Justice Adeyemi directed INEC to officially recognize Lawal as the ADC's flag bearer, updating its records accordingly. This judicial decision brings a close to months of legal contention stemming from rival primaries conducted by different factions within the party, each vying for the governorship ticket.

Reacting to the verdict, Otunba Femi Soluade, the State Chairman of the ADC, hailed the judgment as a "victory for democracy." He expressed relief that the lingering dispute over the party's candidature has been settled. Soluade emphasized the party's commitment to reconciliation, stating, "For us, the soul of the party is what is most important. We have decided that there will be no victor and no vanquished. We must be magnanimous in victory because those on the other side remain our brothers and sisters."

Now that the issue has been resolved, we will strengthen our structures, propagate the ideals of the party and reach out to more people. Soluade announced that the ADC will now focus on rebuilding its structures and unifying aggrieved members in preparation for the upcoming governorship election. He expressed confidence in the party's electoral prospects, stating, "You can take it to the bank that we shall prevail." Jimi Lawal, speaking after the judgment, attributed the victory to divine intervention and expressed gratitude for the resolution of the uncertainty surrounding the primary election.
