Coyoacán Mayor Strengthens Civil Protection Preparedness and Coordination

The Coyoacán mayor's office has reinforced its commitment to civil protection by holding its First Ordinary Session of the Integrated Risk Management and Civil Protection Council for 2026. The meeting, attended by Secretary Myriam Urzúa, underscored the critical role of ongoing prevention efforts, emphasizing that preparedness is a permanent and collaborative task involving both government officials and the public.

A risk atlas should not remain a platform or a technical document; it must become a tool for decision-making and, fundamentally, a tool that reaches the citizens, because an informed population is a population with greater capacity to prevent.

Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez and Secretary Urzúa highlighted the importance of maintaining up-to-date information on local risks and strengthening the municipal Risk Atlas. They also stressed the necessity of regular drills and continuous training for both civil protection personnel and the general population. Secretary Urzúa noted that a risk atlas should be more than a technical document; it must serve as a practical tool for decision-making and be accessible to citizens, thereby empowering an informed populace to better prevent emergencies.

Mayor Gutiérrez described civil protection as a governmental commitment that demands responsibility. "In Coyoacán, we work every day to strengthen prevention and protect the well-being of our neighbors," he stated, adding that preparedness is key to mitigating the impact of seismic events, contingencies, or any other risk situation. He further emphasized that serving the community effectively means working hand-in-hand with residents and officials, recognizing that collective efforts prioritize people and lead to unstoppable progress.

The session also acknowledged the significant workload handled by the Civil Protection Unit. Between November 26, 2025, and August 15, 2026, the demarcation responded to 1,127 emergencies. This statistic underscores the dynamic nature of emergency response in the area and the constant need for vigilance and readiness. The head of the UGIRyPC for Coyoacán, Jorge Peña, reiterated that "the best public policy in integrated risk management and civil protection will be one that manages to protect a life before we have to lament its loss.
