Crash tests show Chinese cars have become safety fortresses

Chinese electric cars are making a stronger showing in European safety testing. Euro NCAP awarded five stars to the Aion UT, Geely E2 and Leapmotor B05 under its 2026 assessment protocols.

The results come as Chinese brands expand their presence in European markets. They represented 7% of new-car sales in the European Union and almost 10% in the United Kingdom last year. The number of Chinese vehicles assessed by Euro NCAP has also risen nearly tenfold since 2021.

The Geely E2 led the safe-driving category with a score of 79%, while the Leapmotor B05 achieved the highest result for crash protection, at 92%. The testing body nevertheless found weaknesses. It reported inconsistent performance from the Geely E2’s automatic emergency braking system and said the Aion UT relied too heavily on its touchscreen for driving controls.

The Cupra Raval received four stars in its basic configuration and five with the optional Safety Pack. Its two ratings have renewed an industry debate over whether all active-safety features should come as standard equipment.

Euro NCAP programme director Dr. Aled Williams said Chinese vehicle safety had improved dramatically since the organization tested its first Chinese-built car in 2010. He added that the latest results showed manufacturers were continuing to work toward the high standards European consumers expect.
