Crete: 85 migrants rescued by Frontex, transferred to Kalo Limenes

Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, has coordinated the rescue of around 85 migrants found in two separate dinghies off the coast of Crete. The operation took place in the sea area east-southeast of Kalo Limenes, a port town on the southern coast of the island.

The Hellenic Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) was actively involved in overseeing the rescue efforts. According to the coast guard, a Frontex drone initially spotted the two dinghies carrying the migrants. A patrol vessel from the Hellenic Coast Guard was promptly dispatched to the location to ensure the safety and transfer of all individuals aboard.

All 85 migrants are now being transported to the port of Kalo Limenes. This rescue highlights the ongoing challenges faced in the Mediterranean Sea, where migrant crossings continue despite dangerous conditions. Frontex and national coast guards frequently conduct such operations to save lives in distress at sea.
