Criticize Hou, then praise him for the election? Su Chiao-hui says parties must work together for New Taipei

Su Chiao-hui says cooperation with New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi is not an election tactic but part of her work as a central government representative.

Speaking at a Zhongyuan memorial event at the Sanchong Fruit and Vegetable Market on Sept. 1, the Democratic Progressive Party candidate was asked about recent polling. She said she respected individual surveys, but added that her support, favorability, and perceived suitability had all risen in recent polls.

For the good of New Taipei, the central and local governments should work together across party lines.

One survey reportedly placed Su about 0.5 percentage points ahead of her rival, Lee Chuan-chiao. She also addressed the view that a proposed cooperation between the Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party had failed to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of its parts.

Lee had questioned why Su previously criticized Hou’s administration for lacking standout achievements but now praised the mayor. Su responded that, over 10 years as a New Taipei legislator and central government representative, she had worked to secure resources for the city. She said the central government, the city government led by Hou, and city councilors should work together whenever an effort benefits New Taipei, without dividing along party or central-local lines.
