Taiwan Warns Kyrgyzstan Not to Follow China’s Efforts to Denigrate Its Sovereignty

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has issued a sharp warning to Kyrgyzstan after China and Kyrgyzstan signed agreements on a comprehensive strategic partnership and permanent good-neighborly cooperation.

The ministry said the documents seriously demean Taiwan’s sovereignty. It accused China of repeatedly using international engagements with other countries to promote what it called an absurd authoritarian version of the “one-China” principle and said the statements sought to undermine international stability and peace.

Taiwan urged the Kyrgyz government not to follow what it described as China’s distorted and false narrative. The ministry said the Republic of China, Taiwan, is a sovereign independent country, and that Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other. It said statements intended to tarnish Taiwan’s sovereign status could not change what it called the objective fact and existing situation across the Taiwan Strait.

The ministry also called on the international community to take seriously China’s long-term use of pressure and incentives to persuade foreign governments to alter their sovereignty decisions. It described the practice not only as pressure on Taiwan, but also as a challenge to democratic systems and the international rule-of-law order.

Taiwan said it would continue deepening cooperation with countries that share its values and maintain its existing position despite economic pressure and what it called diplomatic bullying. The ministry said Taiwan would keep engaging with the world and demonstrate national resilience.
