Croatia Faces Severe Heatwave with High Danger Alerts Issued

Croatia is currently grappling with an intense heatwave, as temperatures are set to soar, prompting health warnings across the nation. The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued alerts for high and very high danger from heatstroke, advising citizens to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during the hottest parts of the day.

Temperatures are expected to reach up to 37 degrees Celsius in Slavonia, Baranja, and Srijem, and between 35 and 37 degrees in central Croatia. Coastal areas could see temperatures as high as 38 degrees Celsius, with sea temperatures ranging between 25 and 27 degrees. While a slight moderation of the heat is anticipated after the weekend, the hot and predominantly sunny weather is forecast to persist until at least the middle of next week.

The DHMZ has provided a detailed breakdown of the danger levels for various regions. Zagreb is expected to experience very high danger (level 3) from Saturday to Monday, following a day of high danger (level 2) on Friday. Rijeka and its surrounding areas are also under a very high danger alert (level 3) for the entire period from Friday to Monday. Other cities like Osijek, Karlovac, Gospić, and Knin will also face significant heat risks, ranging from moderate to very high.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids and stay informed about official recommendations. The heat is particularly concerning for vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. While sea breezes may offer some relief along the coast, inland areas are expected to experience higher temperatures, and nights may offer less respite from the heat.
