Croatia Introduces Car Subsidy for Large Families Amid Demographic Upturn

Croatia is witnessing a positive demographic shift, with birth rates rising for the third year in a row. Minister of Demography Ivan Šipić announced that last year saw 410 more births than the previous year, and this trend has continued into the current year, with nearly 700 more births recorded by mid-year.

410 more born children give us hope, and that trend has continued in 2026 because in half a year we have almost 700 more born children, which is double the number for the whole year last year.

To further encourage families, the government will launch a new initiative to help families with four or more children purchase seven-seater vehicles. The state will co-finance these car purchases with up to 15,000 euros, though a certain income threshold will apply. Minister Šipić advised families planning to buy a car in the fall to wait, as this subsidy will offer significant savings.

These measures are part of a broader government strategy to ease the lives of families, encompassing affordable housing, healthcare, and education. The minister highlighted the new Ministry's coordinating role in these efforts. However, he also voiced serious concern over the rising number of abortions, calling it a "devastating and sad" issue and a "deep wound in Croatian society."

Despite these challenges, Croatia is also seeing more people returning to the country than emigrating. The government is preparing a law on demographic renewal and additional measures to support returning citizens, signaling a commitment to reversing negative demographic trends.
