Croatia is preparing to host the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb from August 13-23, an event hailed as a crowning achievement for the Croatian Gymnastics Federation.

Mario Vukoja, advisor to the president of the Croatian Gymnastics Federation for elite sports and international relations, emphasized the historical significance of bringing the championship to Croatia. "The most beautiful thing is that we have finally brought the European Gymnastics Championships to Croatia, considering the results of Croatian gymnastics over the past almost 20 years," Vukoja stated. He noted that Croatian gymnasts have consistently medaled or reached finals in international competitions.

This championship will be the first in Europe to offer prize money for both athletes and coaches, a move intended to send a strong message about Croatia's commitment to the sport. Vukoja also addressed the high expectations from the Croatian public, acknowledging the nation's passionate support for its athletes. "I think that in every country, as in football, we have as many coaches as inhabitants, and athletes live with the fact that expectations are high," he said.

Vukoja stressed the importance of thorough preparation, involving experts from all fields to ensure athletes are mentally and physically ready. The event will also feature Ilija Kovtun, described as potentially the best athlete to compete under the Croatian flag since Nikolaj Pešalov. Kovtun, noted for his unusual height and strength for a gymnast, competes in the all-around at a level that could lead to medals.
