Croatian firefighters' watermelon video goes viral amid severe fire season

Firefighters from Supetar, Croatia, captured the world's attention with a lighthearted video shared on their Facebook page. The clip, which garnered approximately two million views in a single day, shows a tired firefighter enjoying a large watermelon after battling blazes. The firefighters humorously captioned the video, "There's no bird like a watermelon spoon," referencing the cutlery they carry.

The post quickly went viral, attracting comments and support from users worldwide, including New Zealand, Romania, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Portugal. Many expressed their appreciation for the firefighters' hard work and dedication.

However, this moment of levity occurred against the backdrop of one of Croatia's most demanding fire seasons. In recent days, Dalmatia has been hit by numerous large fires, stretching resources thin as firefighters were simultaneously engaged at multiple locations. Major fires erupted from Omiš and Pelješac to Dugi Otok and the Zadar region. The Croatian army's air support was deployed to assist in combating the rapidly spreading flames.

The situation was particularly dire in the Omiš area, where a fire that started on August 13th near the Adriatic highway spread rapidly, threatening homes and forcing the evacuation of residents and tourists. Some fled by sea as the fire consumed approximately 900 to 1000 hectares, with a fire line reaching 23 kilometers at its peak. The blaze resulted in destroyed homes, cars, and boats, and tragically, one person lost their life. Dozens sought medical attention, some with severe burns.

While the aftermath of the Omiš disaster was still being addressed, firefighters were simultaneously battling other significant blazes. On Pelješac, a fire raged across difficult, steep terrain, endangering homes, vacation properties, and vineyards. Firefighters, aided by water-bombing aircraft, managed to defend threatened houses and vineyards. Concurrently, a large fire broke out on Dugi Otok, consuming brushwood and forest in inaccessible areas.
