Croatian photographer showcases homeland's beauty on global stage

Renowned Croatian photographer Goran Jović recently gained international recognition by presenting his work at the Huawei Global Launch event in Kuala Lumpur. He was among a select group of artists chosen to showcase their talent on a global stage, sharing a series of photographs that highlight the natural beauty, emotional depth, and captivating landscapes of Croatia.

The whole story started as a big surprise for me!

Jović's presentation aimed to tell a story about the connection between humans and nature, featuring images captured in his home country. He believes that spectacular scenes are not necessarily found thousands of miles away, but often lie hidden in plain sight, requiring a shift in perspective to appreciate. His work demonstrates how even familiar landscapes can appear entirely new when viewed through a different lens.

When I made it to the shortlist, she told me there was a possibility we could be selected for the global launch. Just that fact was a big recognition, and when the confirmation came that we were traveling to Kuala Lumpur, I knew we were in for an experience that doesn't happen every day.

One particularly moving moment during his presentation involved a photograph of his wife, Diana, with an owl, which elicited spontaneous applause from the audience and became an emotional highlight of the event. Jović explained that the invitation to participate in the global launch came as a surprise, initiated by Lana Jelić, Huawei's marketing director, who nominated him without his initial knowledge.

It's no small thing to be among only two photographers from around the world given the opportunity to present their work at such an event, especially when you come from a small country like Croatia. It's confirmation that dedicated work and an authentic story can cross all borders.

Being selected as one of only two photographers worldwide for this prestigious platform was a significant honor for Jović, especially representing a small country like Croatia. He sees it as validation that dedicated work and authentic storytelling can transcend borders. Jović stressed the importance of authenticity in his photography, stating that each presented image represents a moment that was genuinely experienced, not staged. He believes that emotion is the key ingredient that makes a photograph unforgettable.

I wanted to show that we don't have to look thousands of kilometers away for the most beautiful stories. Sometimes it's enough to slow down, look around, and notice the moments that have always been there. Croatia is full of incredible motifs, we just need to learn to see them with different eyes.
