Croatian prosecutors investigate wildfire near Omiš, confirm one death

Croatian prosecutors are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding a devastating wildfire that erupted near Omiš, impacting the Lokva Rogoznica and Mala Luka areas. The blaze, which began on August 13th around 8 p.m. in a forested area, quickly spread due to powerful winds, extending approximately 23 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide.

The fire has caused significant damage, burning an estimated 1,000 hectares of land. Tragically, one person lost their life, and 38 others sustained injuries. Ten individuals required hospitalization due to severe health conditions resulting from the fire. Numerous homes, other structures, and vehicles were also destroyed.

Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the fire's origins and the cause of death for the victim. An autopsy and DNA analysis have been ordered to identify the deceased and determine the exact cause of death. Investigators are collecting surveillance camera footage from the affected areas and photographing the destruction.

Forensic experts from the "Ivan Vučetić" Center for Criminal Investigations and Forensic Examination in Zagreb are assisting with the on-site investigation, collecting material samples to help ascertain the cause of the fire. The Split County State Attorney's Office and the Split-Dalmatia Police Department are continuing to gather evidence and conduct necessary examinations to fully understand the events that led to this tragedy.
