Cuba sends condolences to Japan over deaths from heavy rains

The Cuban government has conveyed its condolences to Japan following the loss of life and extensive damage caused by intense rainfall and flooding in the Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez expressed sympathy "to the Japanese government and people, particularly to the relatives of the victims."

At least eight people died in Chiba prefecture due to the severe weather event. Local authorities and police reported that several victims were trapped in their vehicles or in underground passages by the rapidly rising floodwaters. The Japanese television network NHK reported that approximately 300 buildings across about twenty towns sustained damage, though the full extent is still being assessed due to the high volume of reports.

Chiba prefecture recorded 348 liters of rain per square meter within a 12-hour period, marking a record high since data collection began. The torrential rains caused widespread disruption, paralyzing transportation systems in both Chiba and parts of Tokyo. Thousands of travelers were left stranded, with around 7,000 people spending the night at Narita Airport due to the suspension of train and bus services.
