Cuban field hockey player reportedly abandons delegation in Santo Domingo

Cuban field hockey goalkeeper Moisés David Torres Puig has reportedly gone missing from his national delegation in Santo Domingo, just before the scheduled opening of the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games. The alleged abandonment surfaced through reports citing direct sources and a purported audio recording from the athlete.

The incident is said to have occurred while Torres was attending an exhibition match of the Cuban women's national team at the Parque del Este hockey stadium. According to the report, the player devised a plan to evade his minders. "I was very nervous about being discovered. I felt they suspected something, but I asked for ice saying I had been hit by a ball in training, and that calmed things down a bit," Torres was quoted as saying.

The report further details that after requesting ice, Torres allegedly told his Cuban "custodians" he would dispose of it, using the opportunity to leave the venue and meet someone who was waiting for him. "We exchanged clothes and left walking until the Uber (taxi) arrived," the specialized sports platform attributed to the Cuban athlete.

Authorities from the Games Organizing Committee contacted by EFE stated they were "completely unaware" of the situation. This alleged disappearance follows closely on the heels of another significant incident: nine out of twelve members of the Cuban national canoeing team training in Montreal, Canada, evaded their delegation between July 15 and 18.

The men's field hockey competitions in Santo Domingo are scheduled to run from July 26 to August 4. The circumstances surrounding Torres Puig's departure remain unconfirmed by official sources.
