Curiosity Drives E-Cigarette Use in South Korea; New Regulations Loom

A recent report highlights a significant shift in why South Koreans are choosing e-cigarettes. While social acceptance once drove adoption, 'curiosity' has now emerged as the leading motivation, according to a survey by the Korea Health Promotion Institute. This suggests a changing perception of e-cigarettes, moving from a socially acceptable alternative to smoking to a novel product driven by novelty and sensory appeal.

The data reveals that in 2020, a striking 62.8% of adult e-cigarette users cited curiosity as their main reason for use. This contrasts sharply with a similar survey in 2016, where social acceptability was the dominant factor. The decline in this social aspect, from 61.2% to 31.6%, indicates a maturation or perhaps a diversification of the e-cigarette market in Korea.
