Customs deploy AI to boost revenue, cut leakages

The Nigeria Customs Service is embarking on a significant technological upgrade, integrating artificial intelligence into its operations to bolster revenue collection and plug financial leakages. This strategic move signals a departure from traditional methods, aiming for greater efficiency and transparency in fiscal management.

We all know that in a presidential system of government, the power to oversee the executive lies squarely with the parliament, and this is exercised through committees such as the Public Accounts Committee in both chambers. What we have been used to over the years are summons asking us to explain our revenue, our processes, and our operations.

Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi highlighted a paradigm shift in the Service's relationship with legislative oversight bodies. Instead of merely responding to summons, Customs is now fostering a proactive partnership with the National Assembly. This new approach emphasizes shared responsibility and collaboration, moving away from a historically reactive stance where interactions were often dictated by invitations to explain revenue and operational processes.

But today, we are deliberately flipping that narrative. It is now the Customs that has invited the distinguished committees to engage with us, and we are glad that they responded enthusiastically.

The deployment of AI is anticipated to revolutionize Customs operations. By leveraging advanced algorithms, the Service aims to better manage the complexities of international trade, identify patterns, and detect anomalies with unprecedented accuracy. This technological leap is expected to elevate efficiency beyond the advancements already achieved through risk management systems over the past two decades, positioning Nigeria Customs at the forefront of modern trade facilitation and revenue assurance.
