Customs name Jaiyeola alternate captain

The Nigeria Customs Service has appointed Abdulquadri Jaiyeola as the alternate captain for its men's volleyball team. This decision comes as the team gears up for the second phase of the 2026 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League. The appointment was officially announced in a statement released by the service's Head of Sports, Samuel Onikeku.

Onikeku highlighted Jaiyeola's extensive experience and strong leadership qualities, both domestically and internationally, as key factors in his selection. "Abdulquadri Jaiyeola has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership both at the national and club levels. His experience and dedication make him a worthy addition to the team’s leadership structure as alternate captain," Onikeku stated. Jaiyeola recently led Nigeria's senior men's volleyball team to qualify for the African Nations Championship qualifiers.

A prominent outside hitter who plays for Al-Wasl SC in Dubai, Jaiyeola previously gained recognition with Offa Volleyball Club. He has represented Nigeria at youth and U-21 levels and has prior experience with the Customs team, having competed in the 2021 African Men’s Club Championship in Tunisia. Philip Akande will continue as captain, with Chris Udah and Princewill Okoi serving as first and second assistant captains, respectively.

Onikeku also praised the team's performance in the first phase of the league, urging them to build on their efforts. "Our men’s team displayed a high level of professionalism, discipline and commitment throughout the first phase of the league," he said. "I urge the players to improve on that performance and remain focused as we head into the final phase of the competition. We must continue to complement our efforts with hard work, teamwork and consistency if we are to achieve our objectives."
