Cyprus Investigates Threatening Emails Warning of Assassination Attempt on House Speaker

Cypriot authorities are investigating a series of threatening emails sent to the Democratic Rally (DISY) party, which contained warnings of a potential assassination attempt against party leader and House Speaker Annita Demetriou. The incident has caused significant concern within the party and prompted a mobilization of law enforcement.

The three emails arrived at the DISY headquarters on the afternoon of June 3rd. They specifically targeted Demetriou, who also serves as the President of the House of Representatives. Onoufrios Koulass, a party official, confirmed that Demetriou's security detail was immediately informed and subsequently notified the police. Koulass expressed hope that the threats were not credible but stressed that such a criminal act should not occur. Police visited the party offices to collect evidence for their investigation.

Authorities are currently evaluating the credibility of the threats to determine if additional security measures are necessary. Koulass voiced unease about how the information leaked to the public, noting that only a few trusted individuals were aware of the emails. He suggested the leak might not have originated from within the party and hoped it did not come from the police, an aspect that would also require investigation.

Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis reportedly spoke with Demetriou by phone to discuss the threats and information management surrounding the case. For investigative purposes, further details are being withheld, but the police reiterated that all threats are promptly examined.
