Da Nang's AI Ambitions Lag Behind Exponential Growth, Warns Former Official

Da Nang, a city that has often prided itself on its forward-thinking approach to technology and urban development, is facing a critical juncture. A recent forum convened by the City Party Committee aimed to harness the intellectual power of its scientists and experts to chart a course for the future. However, the discussions revealed a stark reality: while the world, particularly in the realm of Artificial Intelligence, is advancing at an exponential pace, Da Nang's progress risks being left behind.

My feeling is that the city lacks a general commander. While artificial intelligence (AI) is developing exponentially, everything we are doing, even with great effort, is only at an arithmetic progression.

Vo Duy Khuong, a respected former Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, did not mince words. He pointedly observed that the city lacks a unified command structure for its technological initiatives. In an era where AI is rapidly reshaping industries and societies, Da Nang's efforts, he lamented, are akin to adding stones one by one while AI is building skyscrapers. This stark analogy underscores the urgency for a cohesive and powerful strategy.

Khuong's critique extended to the business sector, highlighting a significant disconnect. A staggering 98% of businesses are not fully engaged in digital transformation, with many citing a lack of trust in financial transparency as a major deterrent. This suggests that beyond technological infrastructure, Da Nang must also address systemic issues of trust and governance to truly unlock its potential. The city's ambition to achieve double-digit growth cannot be realized if its economic engine – its businesses – remains hesitant to embrace the digital future.
