Dakuitoga Shifts Focus to Grassroots Development

After more than 30 years at the forefront of Fijian rugby league, Joe Dakuitoga is moving away from national duties and turning his attention to the sport’s grassroots.

The former Fiji Bati and Fiji Bulikula head coach was among the pioneering Fijian athletes who moved from rugby union to rugby league. His playing career helped popularize the sport when it was still emerging in Fiji, while his work as a national coach helped the Fiji Bati earn greater respect internationally.

Dakuitoga now believes his strongest contribution may come through young players. He wants to help build the skills, discipline, resilience and sportsmanship needed to sustain Fijian rugby league beyond his own era.

“I have done enough for national duties, and I’m resigning from national duties and will be available if there’s any way I can help in the development of grassroots development,” he said. His new role keeps him connected to the game while placing his experience at the service of the next generation.
