Dangerous experiment? World's first AI-governed island to feature robot 'ministers' inspired by Churchill, Roosevelt, and Gandhi

In a move that sounds ripped from the pages of science fiction, the Philippines is home to an island preparing for a radical social experiment: Sensay, a mere 3.6 square kilometer island, is slated to be governed entirely by artificial intelligence.

Acquired in 2025 by British tech entrepreneur Dan Thomson, founder of a chatbot company, Sensay is envisioned as a micronation led by a council of 17 AI robots. These digital 'ministers' are designed to embody the wisdom and leadership qualities of historical figures such as Winston Churchill, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marcus Aurelius, Nelson Mandela, Leonardo da Vinci, Sun Tzu, and Mahatma Gandhi. Thomson believes this 'digital elite,' trained on the authentic writings and philosophies of these leaders, can efficiently administer the community.

However, the project is not without its potential pitfalls. Critics, and even Thomson himself, caution that the experiment could spiral out of control if the AI's capabilities advance beyond their programmed parameters. While current decisions are implemented by human intermediaries, the long-term plan involves directly connecting the AI council to independent bank accounts and crypto wallets. Granting software the power to hire and pay people in the real world without human approval presents a significant risk of massive errors and financial losses. As Thomson grimly noted, 'If it starts buying weapons and attacking neighboring islands, the situation would become truly critical.'
