Dangerous Online Network Targets Children, Encouraging Violence and Self-Harm

A dangerous online criminal network, dubbed The Com (The Community), is actively targeting children and adolescents, luring them into encrypted communication channels through social media and gaming platforms. Europol reports that over 4,000 online addresses linked to this network have been identified, with ongoing investigations across multiple European countries.

Experts warn that children are exposed to violent and disturbing content, as well as various forms of psychological manipulation. "They not only shared illegal content but also encouraged children to commit violence, self-harm, and psychologically manipulated them," stated telecommunications expert Đuro Lubura. Psychologist Ivan Ćaleta noted that vulnerable children are particularly at risk, as social media algorithms can lead them to content related to mental health, potentially exposing them to exploiters.

The initial contact often occurs on popular platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Discord, or during online gaming. The network members initially foster a sense of belonging and acceptance before demanding concessions, such as intimate photos or participation in closed, encrypted groups. Europol highlights the use of coded language and the encouragement of self-harm, sexual exploitation, and the dissemination of extreme violent content within these groups, where members compete for brutality.

To combat this threat, experts advise parents to be vigilant about changes in their children's behavior, such as withdrawal, screen hiding, or avoidance of conversation. "Open conversation, educating children, and using technology to limit access to harmful content can make a big difference," Lubura emphasized.
