Danish cyclists seek springboard abroad

While Danish cycling has a strong reputation for producing world-class riders from its own continental teams, three Danish cyclists are forging a different path this year. Kasper Andersen, Mads Andersen, and Matias Malmberg are competing in the PostNord Danmark Rundt as part of the Italian continental squad, Swatt Club. This choice represents a departure from the traditional route taken by many Danish talents.

The decision to join an Italian team stems from a desire for a unique experience. Kasper Andersen noted that the team's "different clothes" and distinct social media presence set them apart. He also highlighted the "great fanbase in Italy," which contributes to a "super good atmosphere" and a feeling of being part of something larger. Although a fourth Dane, Oliver Knudsen, was initially slated to join, he did not start, leaving a trio representing Denmark on the Italian squad.

This unconventional choice is partly inspired by fellow Dane Asbjørn Hellemose, who previously rode for Swatt Club and secured a contract with a World Tour team the following year. He added that the team races "cool races" with a "good attitude," making it an attractive option.

Matias Malmberg, who has shown strong performances in the early stages of the Danmark Rundt, feels that riding for an Italian team offers more "adventure." Despite living in Denmark, the riders meet for training camps and compete in races outside the usual circuit for Danish teams. Malmberg emphasized that it's not just about the adventure; the setup is "something bigger" than what he experienced previously, and it's a "step up." All three riders, in their mid-20s, share the dream of signing with a World Tour team, a goal the Swatt Club management actively supports, aiming to help their riders progress.
