Danish Organizations Welcome Major Offshore Wind Farm Projects

Danish business organizations have expressed approval for the development of two major offshore wind farms in the North Sea and Kattegat, to be built by the Swedish company Vattenfall Vindkraft. The projects, announced by the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Utilities, are set to deliver 1.8 GW of power starting in the early 2030s, a capacity sufficient to cover the electricity consumption of 1.8 million Danish households. This development is seen as a vital step in electrifying Denmark's transportation and heating sectors.

When the parks are in operation in the early 2030s, our electricity consumption will be much greater than today. Electric cars and electric trucks will dominate the roads. And district heating will increasingly come from electric heat pumps. The core of the green transition is to replace oil and gas with green electricity, and the two parks will be crucial in that transformation.

Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark, highlighted the necessity of these wind farms, stating that electricity consumption will significantly increase with the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and heat pumps. He emphasized that replacing oil and gas with green electricity is central to the green transition, making these new wind farms indispensable. The organization also called for increased development of onshore wind power, noting that only 21 turbines have been erected in the past three years due to rising project costs.

Dansk Industri (DI) echoed this sentiment, with Vice Director Troels Ranis stating that more offshore wind power is a prerequisite for a greener, more electrified Denmark.
