Danish Princess Isabella begins military service

Princess Isabella of Denmark, at 19 years old, has officially commenced her military service, embarking on an 11-month term with the Royal Life Guards Hussar Regiment in Slagelse. Smiling broadly and carrying her backpack, she arrived at the Antvorskov barracks to begin her training.

This marks a significant step as Denmark recently extended its mandatory military service from four to 11 months, adapting to the evolving security landscape in Europe. The country has also introduced compulsory military service for women aged 18 and older, though only a portion of each age group is currently conscripted. Princess Isabella, the second eldest child of King Frederik X and Queen Mary, is among the first women to undertake this newly extended basic training.

According to Danish media reports citing the royal palace, Princess Isabella has chosen to waive any salary during her military tenure. Her older brother, Crown Prince Christian, also completed his military service at the same Slagelse barracks, pursuing training for the rank of second (junior) lieutenant last year.

The tradition of Danish royal family members serving in the armed forces is well-established, mirroring practices in other European monarchies. This commitment underscores the royal family's connection to national service and defense.
