DAP Leader Slams Pas President: Malay Muslim Menteri Besar Already Mandated by Constitution

A Perak DAP leader has sharply criticized the Pas president's remarks regarding the Johor state election. Pas President Abdul Hadi Awang stated that his party's goal in the Johor polls was to ensure the state remained under Malay Muslim leadership. However, Dr. Abdul Aziz Bari, the Vice Chairman of DAP Perak, countered that this is a settled matter, as the constitutions of the nine Malay sultanates already stipulate that the position of Menteri Besar can only be held by a Malay Muslim. Abdul Aziz questioned Awang's awareness of this fundamental constitutional requirement, given his past roles as Terengganu Menteri Besar and a Member of Parliament. He emphasized that not only the Menteri Besar but also the State Secretary, who heads the civil service, must be a Malay Muslim. Abdul Aziz, who is also the assemblyman for Tebing Tinggi, noted that the Terengganu State Constitution similarly enshrines this rule. He reminded that elected officials swear an oath to uphold the constitution, questioning Awang's understanding of his own oath, which he has taken since 1982. Pas has set a target to become the opposition bloc and an advisor to the government in the Johor state election, deciding to field candidates in 11 state constituencies based on careful assessment of areas with high chances of winning.
