Daugai hosts one of Alytus District's biggest celebrations: #DaugaiMindaugai

The town of Daugai celebrated Lithuania's Statehood Day with its largest event of the year, #DaugaiMindaugai. Festivities commenced with a Holy Mass at the Church of Divine Providence, followed by a solemn concert performed by opera soloist Irena Milkevičiūtė and her students, setting a meaningful tone for the national holiday.

A traditional parade of boats adorned with Lithuanian flags on Lake Didžiulis became a highlight, attracting a large crowd. Over fifty watercraft participated, creating a colorful spectacle. Following the parade, an open championship for kayaks and canoes was held to win the Alytus District Municipality Mayor's Cup. Throughout the day, the lake's shore and Daugai's public spaces offered a variety of activities for visitors of all ages, including educational workshops, creative activities, a children's play, and opportunities to learn about police work and first aid.

Attendees also showed interest in a retro and classic car exhibition, local community activities, and a traditional festive fair offering local delicacies and handmade crafts. Music filled the streets and squares, featuring folk ensembles, dance groups, youth performers, and street musicians. Several folk music bands from the Alytus region performed, showcasing traditional Lithuanian music.

The evening program, titled "My Lithuania," was a central event. Mayor Rasa Vitkauskienė emphasized that a nation's strength originates from its people's hearts and daily efforts for their homeland. A particularly poignant moment was the ceremony awarding the title of Honorary Citizen of Alytus District to Laima Žemaitienė, who received the insignia of the Honorary Citizen.

Some say a strong state begins with strong regions. Others – with family, respect, and responsibility. But in reality, everything starts much closer. Right here,” she said, pointing to her heart, emphasizing that the nation's strength is born first and foremost in people's hearts and their daily work for their homeland.
