DBKL to resurface 59km of Kuala Lumpur's main roads, targeting pothole-free status

Kuala Lumpur is set to undergo a significant road improvement initiative as City Hall (DBKL) launches a program to resurface 59 kilometers of its main thoroughfares. The project, scheduled to run in two phases from August 2026 to February 2027, aims to enhance safety and comfort for all road users. This extensive undertaking will cover approximately 1.3 million square meters, focusing on key routes such as Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Kinabalu, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Ampang, and the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway.

The road surface improvements will also help increase tire grip, especially in wet or rainy conditions.

The scope of the program extends beyond simple repaving. DBKL plans to include repairs to curbs, milling and paving, manhole cover adjustments, and remarking of road lines. Maintenance work on bridges, replacement of guardrails and bridge joints, installation of flexible poles, rumble strips, and repairs to traffic light systems are also part of the comprehensive plan. The use of Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA14) is expected to provide better durability under heavy loads, while thermoplastic road markings will improve visibility at night.

Through the program, DBKL aims to increase the lifespan of the pavement by up to 50 percent, while ensuring the affected areas are 100 percent pothole-free, and routine maintenance costs can potentially be reduced by up to 40 percent.
