De la Espriella launches management unit for Bogotá to coordinate with Mayor's office

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella officially inaugurated the "Gerencia para Bogotá," a new national government entity tasked with coordinating strategic city projects alongside the Mayor's office. The unit will be headed by former councilor Clara Lucía Sandoval.

De la Espriella emphasized that the new management unit is not intended to compete with the Mayor's office or create additional bureaucracy. Instead, its mission is to "articulate, manage, and produce results," moving "from discourse to results." This initiative stems from a commitment to work collaboratively on critical issues such as mobility, security, infrastructure, housing, and environmental concerns.

A central focus for the Gerencia para Bogotá will be ensuring the continuity and completion of the first line of the Bogotá Metro. The President also highlighted plans to advance the second line, assess the feasibility of a third, and begin planning for a fourth, aiming to establish a comprehensive mass transit network for the capital.

Security is another key area of coordination. De la Espriella announced that the national government and the district will collaborate to enhance police presence, intelligence capabilities, and technological resources to combat organized crime. "In security, the national government, the Mayor's office, and law enforcement must act as one body, as one team," he stated.

Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán welcomed the new government's willingness to work with local authorities and respect territorial autonomy. He noted that Sandoval's unit would have a "strategic, technical, and operational" character, identifying project obstacles and transforming them into concrete solutions. Galán also mentioned that De la Espriella had helped unblock the Norte Highway expansion project shortly after taking office.
