Deadly fires in eastern Algeria leave 73 dead in Jijel province

Eastern Algeria is reeling from a devastating toll as wildfires have ravaged the wilaya of Jijel, claiming the lives of at least 73 people. Among the victims were 21 members of a single family, highlighting the tragic impact of the blazes. The municipality of Djemaa Beni Habibi issued a provisional death toll of 73, cautioning that the final number of fatalities is expected to rise.

Search and rescue operations are actively underway as authorities work to locate individuals reported missing in the aftermath of the fires. The infernos have not only resulted in immense loss of life but have also caused extensive material damage. Approximately 80% of the forest cover in this region, known for its lush greenery and summer tourism, has been destroyed.

In response to the scale of the tragedy, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has declared a three-day period of national mourning. Describing the human losses as a "tragic burden," the president announced that flags would be flown at half-mast across the country, and all festive events and national sports competitions would be canceled during this period.
