Death toll rises to 22 in bus crash in Egypt’s southern Sinai

At least 22 people died and 28 others were injured in a bus crash on the Dahab-Nuweiba road in Egypt’s South Sinai, an area popular with tourists.

The crash occurred in the morning before the bus reached the Al Saada area while traveling toward Nuweiba, a Red Sea destination known for diving and snorkeling. Egypt’s Health Ministry activated its operations center and sent 20 ambulances to evacuate the injured and provide first aid.

Ten of the dead were Jordanian nationals, Jordan’s state broadcaster Al Mamlaka reported, citing Jordanian and Egyptian sources. The sources said 22 Jordanian citizens were traveling on the bus. The vehicle belonged to an Egyptian company that operates maritime transport between Cairo and Amman.

Health Minister Khaled Abdelgafar ordered a higher alert level and directed authorities to ensure medical and emergency services for the victims in coordination with South Sinai officials. Emergency teams took 13 injured people to Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, nine to Saint Catherine Hospital and six to Al Fairuz Hospital.

The Health Ministry offered condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a quick recovery. It said medical teams were working at full capacity and authorities were continuing to monitor the situation.

Road crashes remain a recurring problem in Egypt. The article attributed them to factors including speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, violations of safety rules and, in some cases, carrying more passengers than permitted. Official CAPMAS data recorded 5,829 traffic deaths and 84,553 injuries in Egypt in 2025. Another serious crash on August 11 killed 18 people.
