Defense Minister Nominee Kang Shin-chul Reports 1.13 Billion Won in Assets; Eldest Son Completed Army Service

Defense minister nominee Kang Shin-chul has reported 1.12762 billion won in assets for himself, his spouse and two children ahead of his parliamentary confirmation hearing.

Kang’s own declared assets total 1.01355 billion won. They include a 1.238 billion won apartment in Seoul’s Seocho district, a 2025 Hyundai Tucson valued at 43.97 million won, deposits of 56.8 million won and financial debt of 325.22 million won.

His spouse reported a 2019 Tucson worth 9.74 million won and deposits of 17.56 million won. Their eldest son declared 32.84 million won in deposits and 39.15 million won in securities. Their daughter reported a 160,000-won leasehold right for a residence in Germany and 14.69 million won in deposits. Kang’s father declined to disclose his assets, citing independent financial support.

Kang’s eldest son completed his military service as an Army first lieutenant. President Lee Jae-myung’s nomination statement praised Kang’s experience in defense, military strategy and defense policy.

Lee called him “the best-qualified person to strengthen self-reliant defense capabilities for future warfare and push forward defense innovation based on a strong South Korea-U.S. alliance.” Kang’s nomination will now face the National Assembly’s confirmation process.
