Democrats defend Kim Seung-won and demand Han Dong-hoon undergo phone forensics

The Democratic Party has turned its attack on Han Dong-hoon, telling the independent lawmaker to submit his phone for forensic examination before questioning the qualifications of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won.

Cho Gye-won, a Democratic Party spokesman, said in a written briefing on the 4th that Han was the person who needed to explain himself and face a special counsel investigation. He accused Han of maintaining “cowardly silence” over allegations involving his family and his brother-in-law when Han underwent his own confirmation hearing for justice minister.

The dispute began with Han’s continued allegations against Kim over an alleged “new drug lobbying” controversy involving the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Cho said Han was not in a position to judge Kim’s eligibility for public office, accusing him of invoking fairness and justice only now while ignoring questions raised about him in the past.

Cho also referred to Han’s refusal in an earlier investigation to disclose his phone password, saying he had mocked the judicial system by trying to avoid investigators. He argued that recent technology could make iPhones subject to forensic examination and challenged Han to undergo one openly.

The Democratic spokesman further accused Han of making excessive attacks using Kim’s indictment and investigation records. Cho said a court had already reached an acquittal and called Han’s claims a shallow attempt to distort that ruling. He said Han should instead explain how he obtained the indictment and investigation records, and accused him of turning the National Assembly’s constitutional personnel-vetting powers into a tool for personal publicity.
