Defense Secretary Hegseth to Visit Guantanamo as US Increases Pressure on Cuba

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is scheduled to visit the American military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Pentagon announced in a brief statement.

The visit comes at a time when Washington is intensifying its pressure on the Cuban government. This includes the imposition of sanctions and a significant oil blockade, actions that align with President Donald Trump's stated desire to see the communist government toppled.

Guantanamo Bay, located on the southeastern coast of Cuba, is a site with a complex history. It is known for holding detainees captured after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and has also been considered by the Trump administration as a potential holding center for migrant deportations.

In addition to his trip to Cuba, Secretary Hegseth will also travel to Tampa, Florida. There, he will visit the headquarters of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which is responsible for overseeing American military operations in the Middle East, including actions against Iran.

This visit follows recent high-level engagements involving U.S. military and intelligence officials in Cuba. Last month, the top U.S. general overseeing Latin American operations met with Cuban military leaders at Guantanamo Bay to discuss operational security. Earlier, CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Havana for discussions with Cuban officials.
