Deficiencies alleged in AFA sports center dealings in Miami, reports Herald

Questions are surfacing regarding the transparency of the construction of a community sports center by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) in Miami, with US authorities and local residents voicing concerns. The project, located on an island in North Bay Village, is reportedly under scrutiny amid an FBI investigation into a Florida company connected to the AFA.

Residents of North Bay Village are objecting to the agreement between the city and the AFA for the sports complex, which opened on June 4. The Miami Herald reported that legal documents suggest the City Council may not have followed proper procedures in vetting the firms involved or the project's cost, estimated at $24 million. The approval process is described as "hasty and plagued by disagreements."

Further complicating matters, the Florida Ethics Commission determined that the then-mayor of North Bay Village, Brent Latham, might have violated conflict-of-interest regulations by accepting gifts from the AFA while negotiating the deal. Latham has denied any wrongdoing, stating he has no knowledge of any funds being improperly invested.

The community center, named the Brent W. Latham Community Center, has hosted events with the AFA, including celebrations for Argentina's national soccer team. However, updates indicate the center has been operating on a temporary certificate of occupancy and was not "fully open" as of July 31. The AFA had previously hailed the facility as a "high-tech High Performance Center" vital for positioning Argentine football globally.
