Delivery Workers Protest Outside Mexico City Prosecutor's Office Over Arrests

A group of app-based delivery workers staged a protest outside the Mexico City Attorney General's Office on Friday, demanding justice after five individuals were arrested on charges of extortion. The arrested individuals are accused of targeting delivery workers, allegedly demanding weekly payments and, in some cases, forcing them to transport illicit substances.

Protesters, identified as DiDi delivery workers, gathered on motorcycles in front of the prosecutor's office, displaying signs with slogans such as "Justice for Nancy and Enrique." They specifically called for justice for their colleagues, Nancy and Enrique, who were reportedly among those detained by authorities. The demonstration highlighted the workers' grievances and their demand for fair treatment and safety in their profession.

According to reports, the five arrested individuals allegedly demanded 700 pesos weekly from delivery workers to allow them to continue working. The accusations also include forcing workers to deliver cocaine and marijuana, adding a dangerous dimension to the alleged extortion scheme. The detained individuals include Oswaldo, Nancy, Enrique, Amalia, and Juan.

The protest occurred while security personnel guarded the entrances to the Attorney General's Office. The legal proceedings against the accused will be determined by the relevant ministerial and judicial authorities. This incident underscores the precarious working conditions faced by some gig economy workers and the challenges they encounter in seeking recourse against alleged exploitation and criminal activity.
