Delta Govt Suspends Works Commissioner Over Alleged Assault

The Delta State Government has suspended its Commissioner for Works (Highway and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, following allegations of assaulting his aide, Simon Mudi. The suspension notice was issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu, in Asaba.

The incident leading to the suspension is reportedly connected to a viral video capturing a physical altercation at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun during a Delta Central Stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Although the fracas did not occur within the meeting hall itself, the governor's aide was assaulted on the premises afterward, prompting Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to order an investigation.

A meeting of leaders from a registered political party was violently broken up, and a serving government official was assaulted with dangerous weapons in broad daylight. That this could happen at all says something deeply troubling about where Delta State’s politics is headed.

The video shows several men pursuing and striking Mr. Mudi, also known as “Temple,” with bottles and chairs. Mr. Mudi was later seen receiving medical treatment for visible injuries. While the immediate cause of the attack remains unconfirmed, the violence has heightened concerns about escalating political tensions as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.

Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege criticized the incident, describing it as "political thuggery" and alleging a pattern of political violence in Delta. He claimed the attackers were sponsored and linked the assault to an earlier alleged attack on another opposition figure. Omo-Agege urged a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible to ensure a peaceful political environment. The Delta State Government, however, rejected these allegations, insisting the incident should not be politicized.
