Democracy Day: FG pledges to strengthen democracy, national unity

Nigeria's Federal Government has pledged to bolster democratic governance and national unity as the country prepares to mark its 27th Democracy Day. The assurance came from Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris, following a special Juma'at prayer service held as part of the commemoration.

Today, we joined millions of Nigerians in offering prayers for our nation as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day Celebration, which occurs on June 12, 2026.

Idris stated that the prayer service offered a moment for Nigerians to seek divine guidance and reflect on their role in sustaining peace and development. He emphasized that national progress requires not only good governance but also the active participation and prayers of all citizens. "This solemn Juma’at service reminds us that Nigeria’s progress, unity and stability require not only good governance but also the prayers, support and active participation of all citizens," he said.

The minister also noted that Democracy Day serves as an occasion to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic rule, specifically mentioning Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. He highlighted Abiola's courage and commitment as enduring symbols of Nigeria's democratic journey. The annual observance, he added, also celebrates the resilience of Nigeria's democratic institutions and the public's dedication to constitutional governance.

As we commemorate Democracy Day, we reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes, especially Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whose courage, resilience and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

"Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance testify to the resilience of our democracy and the determination of our people to uphold democratic values," Idris remarked. He reiterated the administration's commitment under President Bola Tinubu to deepening democracy and fostering national cohesion, underscoring the government's focus on strengthening these pillars of the nation.
