Democratic Party Leader Criticizes Supreme Court Chief Justice's 'Crafty Move' on Justice Nomination

Kim Min-seok, leader of the Democratic Party, on Monday criticized the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court's proposal for appointing a Supreme Court justice, calling it a "crafty move" and a "cowardly" situation.

Kim alleged that the Chief Justice's proposal for "written submission" was an attempt to neutralize the Supreme Court Justice Recommendation Committee by having the government reject it. He suggested that if this analysis is correct, it is a "futile stratagem."

Speaking at a Supreme Council meeting, Kim directed the party to review amending the law that requires the formation of a recommendation committee every time a Supreme Court justice is to be recommended. This move aims to block the Chief Justice's alleged scheme.

The Blue House is reportedly considering a plan where the Chief Justice would not send the appointment confirmation bill for Supreme Court Justice nominee Son Bong-ki to the National Assembly, but instead request the nomination again, bypassing prior consultation with President Yoon Suk Yeol. This follows the Chief Justice's unilateral nomination of Son Bong-ki without consulting the president.

Kim also urged the judiciary to learn from the prosecution's past failures to self-reform, stating, "The current situation where the Chief Justice makes a crafty move, the head of the court administration defends it, and the judiciary remains silent is cowardly."
