Democratic Party to Announce Jeju, Incheon Primary Results

The Democratic Party of Korea is set to reveal the outcomes of its Jeju and Incheon regional primaries on August 8, a key step in electing its new leadership at the August 17 national convention. These regional contests are crucial as they represent a significant portion of the party's active membership.

Following the Jeju and Incheon events, the party will announce results for the Gangwon, Daegu, and Gyeongbuk regions on August 9. The national tour of primaries will conclude with the Honam region (Jeonnam and Gwangju) on August 15 and the Gyeonggi and Seoul regions on August 16. These regions collectively hold a substantial majority of the party's delegates and members.

In the first week of regional primaries, which included the Chungcheong and Busan/Ulsan/Gyeongnam areas, candidate Jeong Cheong-rae secured first place with 45.51% of the vote, narrowly beating Kim Min-seok, who garnered 44.52%. Song Young-gil trailed in third with 9.97%. Among the supreme council candidates, Choi Min-hee, Park Seon-won, Han Min-soo, Seo Mi-hwa, and Kim Yong secured the top five positions, though these figures do not yet include the 5% weighting for the Gyeongnam region.

The final leadership will be determined by a combination of 70% delegate and party member votes and 30% public opinion polls, with the overall winner to be declared at the national convention on August 17.
