Democratic Party Urges Rival Party to Cooperate on Election Commission Reform

The Democratic Party has called on Jang Dong-hyuk, a key figure in the rival People Power Party, to actively support reforms of the National Election Commission (NEC). Han Byung-do, acting floor leader of the Democratic Party, criticized Jang on July 10, accusing him of being preoccupied with "inciting fake election conspiracy theories" rather than engaging in genuine reform efforts.

"The Democratic Party will promptly pursue fundamental reforms, including the dissolution of the NEC," Han stated during a party supreme council meeting. He emphasized the party's commitment to protecting citizens' voting rights and restoring the integrity of the electoral system through special prosecutors and reform legislation.

If the People Power Party truly cares about citizens' right to vote, they should cooperate with NEC reform.

Han also addressed proposed reforms concerning the prosecution's investigative powers, asserting that completing prosecutorial reform is essential for creating a criminal justice system that serves the public. He expressed anticipation for a clearer division of roles and enhanced professionalism among investigative agencies following the complete abolition of supplementary investigative powers.

The Democratic Party will lead the way in protecting citizens' voting rights and establishing a sound election management system through special prosecutors and reform legislation.

Acknowledging potential concerns regarding these reforms, Han assured that the Democratic Party is aware of them. He pledged that robust security measures would be implemented during the review process in the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee to address these issues.
